Repair My Credit

by LoanDebtCredit

Collections, charge offs and delinquent payment notices on a credit report are all good enough reasons to learn how to repair my credit. Credit repair is a very lucrative business. There are many companies that specialize in helping people to remove negative items from their credit reports. For individuals that have large amounts of negative debt it is obvious that having bad credit can be a very unfortunate circumstance. People with ad credit often pay more for services and at times are denied for loans and credit cards. Lenders and financial institutions simply don’t trust people with bad credit, and this is reflected in the high interest rates and payments that those with bad credit pay. Luckily, credit repair is an option for those who are looking to improve their financial status.

There are two main ways to repair your credit. The first way to repair credit is to do so yourself. Credit repair may seem like a daunting task, but in reality it is not. It simply requires the willingness to take control over your debt. If you decide to repair your credit on your own it is imperative that you obtain credit reports from the three major credit bureaus Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Different credit reports may contain different information and in order to effectively address all debts it is necessary to have a current copy of all credit reports. The individual should first review each credit report for any discrepancies and errors. If errors are found then you should take action by submitting a formal dispute letter to the credit bureau. This method should be done for each disputed item. Credit reporting agencies have within thirty days to respond to any discrepancies and remove them from a credit report. It should be noted that only incorrect items can be moved. If a debt is valid it cannot be removed even if it has been paid. For those debts that have been paid, but do not appear as such on the credit report, you should provide documentation to the credit reporting agency that proves the debt was paid. Other valid negative items on a credit report should be paid off via a settlement, which is an agreement to pay off a debt for a lower amount, or through a payment plan. Paying off the negative items on a credit report will slowly improve the credit score and repair credit over time.

The second method some people use in repairing their credit is seeking the assistance of a credit repair company. Credit repair companies claim that they can erase your bad credit by removing negative items on your credit report. This is true to an extent. A credit repair company can work on behalf of the individual to contact the creditors and make payment arrangements and settlement agreements. Likewise, a credit repair can assist in credit repair aiding in the deletion of inaccurate items on a credit report. Credit repair companies are essentially able to do everything that a person is capable of doing to repair credit but they charge fees to do so. Credit repair companies cannot remove items from your credit report that are valid. No one can do this. Negative items whether paid or unpaid will remain on the credit report for 7 ½ years before they are removed by the credit reporting agencies. Beware of companies that promised that they can clean your credit.

In order to repair my credit it is necessary that all credit reports are viewed carefully to identify items that need to be removed or paid. By paying off debts and maintaining responsible financial practices credit repair will occur with time.
